Travel Alert: ETA in the UK

New Travel Rule for the United Kingdom: What You Need to Know About the ETA Requirement

Heads up, travelers! There’s an important change coming for U.S., Canadian, and Australian citizens planning to visit the United Kingdom. Starting January 8th, 2025, if you’re traveling to the UK for short visits, tourism, business, or even just passing through on a layover, you’ll need to apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA).

This new requirement is all about improving security measures before departure, and the ETA will be linked directly to your passport. While the ETA is not a visa, it acts as a digital permission that ensures you’re cleared for entry when you arrive in the UK.

What is an ETA and Why Do You Need One?

The ETA is essentially an online authorization tied to your passport that allows you to travel to the UK without the need for a traditional visa. Once approved, your ETA will grant you permission for unlimited visits to the UK, whether for short stays or for a maximum of up to 6 months at a time. It’s designed to streamline travel and security processes, ensuring a smoother experience for travelers while tightening up border controls.

How to Apply for an ETA

Getting your ETA is quick and easy—here’s how to do it:

  • Online Application: You can apply directly online via the official website or use the UK ETA app.
  • Passport Requirements: Make sure your passport is valid before applying. The ETA is linked to your passport, so it’s essential that your travel document is up-to-date.
  • Application for Others: If you’re applying for someone else, such as a child, you can do so online. However, if you choose to use the app, ensure that the person is physically present with you so you can take their picture during the process.

Processing Times and Costs

Once submitted, your ETA may take up to 3 working days to be processed, so it’s important to apply well in advance of your trip. Keep in mind that if you’re traveling in a group, each person may receive their approval at different times, so be patient as the responses come in.

The cost for an ETA is 10 euros (roughly $12.75 USD) per traveler. Don’t forget, ETAs are required for all ages, including children and babies, so make sure to apply for the little ones as well. Once granted, your ETA will be valid for 2 years or the remaining validity of your passport, whichever is shorter.

In Summary: Key Points to Remember

  • The ETA is required for U.S., Canadian, and Australian citizens traveling to the UK starting January 8th, 2025.
  • It’s a digital authorization linked to your passport, not a visa.
  • ETAs are valid for 2 years or the remainder of your passport’s validity.
  • Processing time can take up to 3 working days.
  • The ETA costs 10 euros (around $12.75 USD) per person.
  • Apply online or via the UK ETA app, ensuring your passport is valid.

Stay ahead of the curve and get your ETA before your UK trip to avoid any last-minute hassle. For more updates and travel tips, follow for more travel alerts! Safe travels! ✈️
